A place where the English history of Alassio meets today's culture
The former Anglican church is one of the most enchanting places in Alassio. A building of particular charm, it tells the story of the British community that, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, chose the Ligurian Riviera as a favored destination for stays and vacations, leaving the city a valuable cultural and architectural legacy.

The History
In the 1920s, the great development of the English colony rendered the first Anglican church of 1881 insufficient to accommodate the faithful. It was then decided to build a new temple, larger and more majestic.
Its construction was the result of a great collective effort: families of the English colony contributed to fundraising through charitable initiatives and social events organized at the British Club. Difficulties arose, including rising costs and unforeseen issues related to the work, but the determination of the community allowed the project to be completed. On Christmas of 1928, the new church, dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, finally opened its doors.

Architecture: timeless details
The building still retains details that narrate the elegant and sober character of the Anglo-Saxon tradition. A charming pergola-lined avenue leads the visitor to the entrance, in a scenic pathway. The surrounding garden creates an intimate and refined atmosphere. On the façade is depicted the symbol of the evangelist John: an open book with the phrase “In the beginning was the Word” written in Greek characters.
Inside, the warmth of wood dominates: the flooring, the timbered ceiling, and the refined wooden balconies create a welcoming and harmonious atmosphere. The large chandeliers designed by architect Newton and the ancient organ made in 1908 by Goll of Lucerne, coming from the previous church, are still valuable elements that testify to the building's history.

The cultural heart of Alassio
Following its deconsecration in 1998, the building was acquired by the Municipality of Alassio and transformed into a cultural space. Today it hosts exhibitions, conferences, concerts, and theatrical performances, thanks to its excellent acoustics and the unique atmosphere of its surroundings.
