Untouched testimony of the Belle Époque
The twelve-thousand-square-meter park surrounding the seven tennis courts and the elegant colonial-style clubhouse make the Hanbury Tennis Club a magical place symbolizing an era. Here, time seems to have stopped in the twenties when it was founded by Daniel Hanbury and when Alassio became the "buen retiro" for many British people.
In 1900, at the age of 24, Daniel Hanbury was entrusted by his father Thomas – the creator of the Mortola Garden in Ventimiglia – with managing the family estate in Alassio. Thanks to him, the town gained international notoriety, and in 1923, a tennis club was established to meet the needs of the growing English community. In Alassio, no place better remembers the atmosphere of those years: the elegant clubhouse preserves the original furnishings and proudly displays ancient wooden rackets, photographs, posters, and items related to the world of tennis and Old England.
The club is situated in a charming location at the foot of a hill, which preserves untouched vegetation, and is easily accessible on foot from the center of Alassio. A magical atmosphere envelops this place, where champions of the romantic era of tennis, such as Hopman, Crawford, De Stefani, Cucelli, or Del Bello, once played, and where today the International Veterans Tournament still takes place.

The complete hospitality of the club
The noble Alassio club still stands out for its 360-degree hospitality: a Lounge with numerous tea and bridge rooms; the Tennis Lodge Villa Filippa, with sixteen cozy rooms; a refined restaurant. All set in an extraordinary beauty, among maritime pines and palm trees, rose gardens, ancient stone walls, bougainvillea, and geraniums on yellow-gold plaster, reflecting the red soil of the courts.
Lounge
The numerous tea and bridge rooms were carefully curated for a long time by Ruth Hanbury, a direct descendant of the founder. Mr. Goodchil, an eccentric Englishman who claimed descent from the Dukes of Wellington, served as secretary for over thirty years. Both ensured impeccable taste and style.
Restaurant
The Skordis family, owners of the club, has paid particular attention to the restaurant's quality among the numerous improvements made to the facilities. Attentive service and a wide selection of Mediterranean and international dishes.
Tennis Museum
The rooms of the clubhouse constitute a true treasure trove of tennis: ancient frames, display cases, and cabinets preserve prints and period photographs that testify to the history and faces of those who have played this sport in Alassio for almost a century.
