Alassio and the Ligurian Riviera have inspired painters and writers for centuries, due to its unique light and breathtaking landscapes. With its hills, beaches and historic villages, the area attracted a significant community of artists. With the “Guide del Golfo”, we’ll discover signs of this past in the West Gallery and the Levi Art Gallery, where interesting paintings of that era are displayed. Nature, sea and culture come together, creating a unique atmosphere.
The tour starts at the Richard West Gallery and English Library, one of the most important English-language libraries in Italy. There are about 15,000 English books and 76 canvases here, extraordinary evidence of the late 19th century Riviera landscape, as well as the presence of the English community. We then go on to visit the Carlo Levi Art Gallery, another artist deeply connected to Alassio. Here, we’ll discover how his personal life-story, Italy’s history, and his art all connect. This visit will not only highlight the stylistic evolution in Levi's work, but will also offer the opportunity to evidence the socio-economic transformations of Alassio and its hinterland.
